About this department

The Department of Masscomunication in Abia State polytechnic, Aba, is in the school of General studies and communication Technology. It awards the National Diploma (ND) in Masscomunication in the prescribed course of study in line with the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE).

It blends academic training with practical work study to give the students technical education and professional skills, ability and aptitude necessary for employment and job connection in the areas of Masscomunication, industry and the New Media.

The Department of Masscomunication is established to be a model for the provision of qualitative, entrepreneurial and professional training to students to meet the demands of the ever dynamic society. The course of study is designed to ensure that technological and specialized education is offered in Broadcasting, Print journalism, Public Relations, Advertising, Publishing, New Media, Photography, Film and Cinematography.

The program also provides the student with the requisite skills and competence to be gainfully self employed in Journalism, Mass Media, New Media and other related fields of human endeavour.

The philosophy and objectives of the program are as follows:

1. To provide technological and professional skills in news gathering and reporting, editing, program presentation and production, preparation and production of materials for publication, advertising, photography, magazines, print journalism, publishing and multi media industry.

2. To provide a specialised, distinctive and qualitative education to students, so as to enable them cope with the demands elicited by the professionalism of Masscomunication and the new media with their sister disciplines such as film, cinematography, public relations, advertising, publishing, performing arts etc.

3. To provide a stepping stone to the Higher National Diploma ( HND) in Masscomunication and other related disciplines.

DR CHINYERE M EZEH

HOD

CHINYERE M EZEH is the Ag. Head, Department of Mass communication. She is a communication scholar with specialization in Broadcasting and Media Studies.
She holds a Bachelor of science (B.Sc) and Master of Science (M.Sc) in Mass communication from the prestigious Enugu state university of Science and Technology (ESUT) She also has a post Graduate Diploma in Education, ( Social Studies) presently she is a Ph.D scholar in Masscomunication with specialization in Broadcast Management.
Chinyere M Ezeh proposed and persistently championed the establishment of Masscomunication Department in the institution during her tenure as the Polytechnic Public Relations Officer (PRO) from 2017 to 2021 during the tenure of Prof. Ezionye Eboh as the Rector. She served in dual capacity as the PRO and a pioneer Lecturer in the Department.
She has held several sensitive positions in the Institution and served as secretary in various committees. She served as a Liaison officer to the Professor J.C. Ogbonna led visitation panel to Abia State polytechnic Aba in 2014. During her tenure as the PRO, she headed the protocol and media subcommittee in the ceremonial commetee.
Chinyere M Ezeh served Prof. Osonwa O.K as a personal assistant during his tenure as the Rector of the Polytechnic from 2021 to 2023 until her appointment as the Ag. Head, Department of Masscomunication in January 2023.
She has several publications to her credit as journals, National and International articles and book chapters in reputable peer reviewed work. She has attended several conferences and presented papers both National and International.
She belongs to the following professional bodies:
Institute of Masscomunication and Information Management of Nigeria.(IMIM)
Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR)
The Association of Communication Scholars and Professionals of Nigeria (ACSPN)
Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN)
Chinyere M Ezeh is a regular Public speaker, writer, presenter and onair personally (OAP)

Admission Requirements

Minimum Entry Requirements

In addition to passing the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), candidates must satisfy the minimum requirements of the Polytechnic which shall be at least one of the following

The possession of at least five relevant credit passes at not more than two sittings in the Senior School Certificate Examination ( SSCE, WAEC, NECO, NABTEB), General Certificate of Education (GCE) or a combination of any two results from any of the aforementioned ;

Any other comparable qualifications which the Academic Board may consider.
